Governor's initiative essential to protecting downstream residents, communities
Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty underscored the need for Pennsylvania to invest in repairing its aging infrastructure during a visit to the Mt. Laurel Dam in Schuylkill County. The secretary said Governor Edward G. Rendell's Rebuilding Pennsylvania initiative would provide new funding to help rehabilitate unsafe, high hazard dams like Mt. Laurel, and that such investments are needed to protect residents, businesses and communities from the loss of life or property...

Water District treatment processes help remove traces of pharmaceuticals
The Santa Clara Valley Water District has been closely monitoring the recent research on pharmaceuticals finding their way into the nation's water supply and has tested its raw water supply for traces of pharmaceuticals. In the testing of source water, the District found only minute detections of pharmaceuticals. The District uses a number of treatment technologies, including ozonation, and just completed construction of a water quality laboratory...

Study examines copper, estrogenic compounds in sewage treatment plant water
A new study discusses how copper and other metals may reduce the toxicity and bioavailability of estrogenic and endocrine-disrupting compounds in sewage treatment plant effluents. The reduction can lead to less exposure of aquatic species and can lessen the presence of such compounds in drinking water. The study's researchers, led by Jong Yol Park, tested the endocrine-disrupting capability of well known endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the presence of various concentrations of copper...

Penn. DEP fines construction company for water quality violations
Quaker Homes Inc. must correct a series of violations at a residential subdivision in Bally Borough, Berks County, and pay $18,900 in penalties under a settlement agreement with the Department of Environmental Protection. Inspections by the Berks County Conservation District between July and Dec. 2007 revealed Quaker Homes failed to implement and maintain erosion and sedimentation control best management practices at the Park Place development in the borough...

Environmental program awards grant to lab research group
An $869,000 grant from the Defense Department's Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) was awarded to Regenesis, URS Corporation, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to evaluate the utility of geophysical imaging tools for investigating the performance of bioremedial soil amendments. Regenesis will administer the grant and will manage transfer of the technology, if successful. The study will be conducted at F.E. Warren Air Force Base (FEW), Cheyenne, Wyoming...

Environmental Biotech's 'bugs' take on Whitbread's FOG
Having to deal with fat, oil and grease (FOG) is a seemingly unavoidable headache experienced by anyone who runs a restaurant. Whilst blocked-drain emergencies have for many years been seen as an inevitable consequence of being a restaurateur, there is now a preventative measure on offer from Environmental Biotech (EB). One of the tools employed is the regular introduction of bugs (a special strain of bacteria) into a restaurant's drains as a way of controlling the discharge of FOG...

Key West waterways benefit from filtration technology after grease spill
A recent grease spill from a local restaurant has officials praising a new preventative technology from AbTech. Smart Sponge Plus is a filtration system that was installed in 11 stormwater drains on Duval Street to capture grease and keep it from polluting the environment. The Smart Sponge Plus is part of the Key West stormwater management project aimed at blocking oil, bacteria and trash from entering the nearby offshore reef community and coastal waters...

New website helps Wisconsin plan for safe drinking water
Wisconsin relies heavily on its groundwater -- 97% of communities in the state and nearly 1 million additional residents with private wells use groundwater for their daily needs. A new website provides easy access to information about Wisconsin's groundwater to assist local governments in protecting this vital resource and to help owners of private wells tap into safe drinking water supplies. The site has been launched in time for National Groundwater Awareness Week, March 9-15...

Sediment removal to enhance water quality at constructed wetland
The Governing Board of the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) approved $1.8 million in funding for maintenance dredging at Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA-5) in Hendry County. By removing excess sediments, the effort will enhance water quality and overall performance of the constructed treatment wetland, which contains nearly 6,200 acres of treatment area to remove phosphorus and other nutrients from water before it enters the famed Everglades...

Western Growers praises governor, calls for comprehensive water infrastructure bond
Tom Nassif, President and CEO of Western Growers, issued a statement in response to a letter from Gov. Schwarzenegger to state Senate leaders outlining his administration's plans on water infrastructure. "Our members provide about half the entire nation's fresh fruits, vegetables and tree nuts... The worsening California water crisis is directly threatening the ability of growers, packers and shippers of this healthy food to continue operating in California"...
