ABB drives to power UK's largest pumping station Six 1250kW ABB industrial drives will be powering the UK's largest pumping station, protecting 700 km² of land in the Cambridgeshire Fens from flooding. The new pumping station at Wiggenhall St Germans will protect more than 25,000 properties, businesses conservation sites and extensive areas of high-grade agricultural land in an area called the Middle Level. The selection of drives technology was made after considering many different solutions for this application...
SMWSA identifies long-term water demands Updated projections from the South Metro Water Supply Authority (SMWSA) identify a need for an additional 75,000 to 148,000 acre-feet per year of renewable raw water supplies to meet its needs through approximately 2060. The additional water would augment existing supplies to serve projected demands, and dramatically increase the renewable and sustainable component of the area's water supply. The new projections estimate water supply needs according to a number of variables...
Teaming up for rural water efficiency On April 21, 2008, EPA's Office of Water and the National Rural Water Association signed a proclamation in Washington, DC on rural water efficiency and conservation. The two organizations commit to work together to reduce water waste and inefficiency and increase awareness of the value of water. "Water is too precious to waste so we're excited about this timely partnership to reduce the leaks and save water, energy, and money," said Benjamin H. Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for Water...
Report shows Penn. streams don't meet water quality standards A newly released report shows that more Pennsylvania streams are losing the battle against pollution this year than in past years, according to the PA Department of Environmental Protection. The report, "The 2008 Pennsylvania Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Report," shows that nearly 16,000 of Pennsylvania's 86,000 miles of streams and rivers do not meet water quality standards. In addition, over 38,300 acres of lakes and ponds are similarly impaired...
Students recognized for contributing to healthier environment The White House and EPA are recognizing young people from around the country at the 2007 President's Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA) for their contributions in promoting environmental awareness and community involvement in such issues as lead, recycling, water quality monitoring, air pollution and carbon footprints. President George W. Bush and EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson presented the awards in a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House...
Museum administrative center topped off with green roof Weston Solutions has completed the installation of a GreenGrid Green Roof System atop the Bunzl Administration Center of the High Museum of Art in midtown Atlanta. While not the first green roof in the Atlanta metropolitan area, it is the largest modular system installed to date. The 6,680-square-foot green roof sets an example of how vegetated green roofs would benefit the City of Atlanta. This green roof has the ability to retain about 62,000 gallons of stormwater per year...

Rendell announced the PENNVEST Board of Directors' approval of $72 million in low-interest loans and grants for 19 brownfields, drinking water, wastewater, and storm water projects in 15 counties. Combined with $8 million in grants, PENNVEST will fund 19 clean water projects...
Wetlands protection debate likely to be heated Debate on expanding and preserving wetlands protections in the Clean Water Act is heating up on Capitol Hill. At issue is whether Congress should adopt legislation that expands the definition of "navigable waters" to include "waters of the United States, including territorial seas." Recent Supreme Court decisions have reined in federal authority to a limited degree, holding that federal regulation of wetlands should be limited to navigable waterways and adjacent wetlands...
ICPI brochure compares permeable pavements Recently the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) released the new Permeable Pavement Comparison Guide. This guide compares the similarities and differences among alternative pavements used for stormwater and sustainable best management practices such as permeable interlocking concrete pavement, pervious concrete and porous asphalt. The guide provides a side-by-side comparison of the available colors, construction efficiencies, costs, winter durability, surface cleaning, and more...
EPA approves Lac du Flambeau tribe's application U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has granted authority to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians to run its own water quality standards program on its Wisconsin reservation. This authority is for the standards programs only. The tribe will have to submit the actual water quality standards developed to EPA for another round of review and approval.
